Now this has a bit of history. I knitted it when I was about 14 (middle 1980's) starting from a pattern published in a teen magazine called Jackie. The pattern had you knit a sweater and then knit the clouds, rainbow etc separately and stitch them on. I remember my friend Sarah from youth club had a version like that. I wanted to knit in intarsia for some reason, so Mum and I hunted around until we found a suitable basic pattern. That was from a long-gone shop called the Wool Workshop in Lincoln. Their version was for a very cartoony picture jumper with "Zap" and "Pow" in big words all over. I graphed out my design and somehow knitted it up even though I didn't really know about bobbins, intarsia or anything! It's knitted in Jamieson & Smith 2-ply Shetland, doubled, with some mystery mohair 4-ply for the clouds and something glittery for the lightning. The bright blue's an awful colour but I'll never throw it away, it brings back so many memories. I wonder whether it'll come back into fashion any time soon?
